      Latent Semantic Indexing

The introduction of latent semantic indexing has brought a whole new sophistication to the SERPS. The algorithm came about through Google trying to accurately determine the type of adsense to display on a site, and now relates to the overall algorithm for scoring pages. Don't just use key words or key phrases in your copy. The search engines are much smarter now. They can easily pick up the real purpose behind the site - or the site's main theme. Use synonyms and talk around the subject to really get the search engines excited about your site.

It goes - almost - without saying that the one dimensional use of key phrases and keywords are not only not sufficient for SE's to pick up your site as a good result for those very phrases - they also carry a slight risk of punitive measures. But don't read that wrong. If the search engine Gods are to pick up the site - they have to contain the phrases you want to be trawled for - but they must also contain related language to be effective. Latent Semantic Indexing is the search engines way of really finding out what your site is about. Instead of valuing copy that differs little accross internal pages other than the key phrases (designed generally to attract visitors for adsense purposes alone - they contain little or no useful information), Google et al will look closely at related pages in the site to determine the value in the genre.

Of course, pages that contain useful information will always be highly valued. But this will be determined through external links to the resource or page of specialised services/products. Also the page may be retuned well in non competitive searches but not well in competitive searches, which all sounds right. The solution? Don't make sites purely for adsense - they are the target of the search engines because they are generally useless to visitors. For genuine resources and/or products and services, get external links to the specific pages. Also, important pages within a site that is not centred on that specific topic will carry weight within the structure of the site. There will also be some related material on other pages. This will be determined by the semantic indexing algorithms facets from the search masters.

Genuine sites will be treated well by 'Latent Semantic Indexing' which will determine the best sites through weight, external reference and internal structure. Don't stuff keywords. Do use synonyms. Do talk around the subject genuinely. Let the SE's do the rest.
