In acquiring external links, obviously we think about anchor text. The assumption for this discussion is the understanding that anchor text is essential in external links. The search engines will expect that some links in the collection of backlinks will be just the URL - but this not how we actively pursue external links. Always ask for the right anchor text at the minimum. But how can we fully exploit the external link? Provide easy-to-copy html for the link and give a multi keyphrase for the anchor text with some separator (comma, pipe, colon...) between phrases. Few appear to use this excellent technique. But in some cases it means that we get three links for every one. Buy one, get two free. How so? Not in volume - but as the search engine's come accross our multi phrase link, they take each one in isolation and consider the factors that make it valuable as a vote for each of the phrases. An example? One of our clients is an eCommerce retailer with several chess sites, one of which is Canada. So the anchor text Chess Pieces, Chess Boards, Chess Sets will help the site rank for the phrases 1. 'Chess Pieces', 2. 'Chess Boards' and 3. Chess Sets, all of which are researched phrases pertaining to the business of chess. This particular site is the latest franchise in a series (as of mid 2006) and still has work to so, but other sites in the company have performed well for each of these phrases, notably the UK branch, using this technique. A further technique to get great anchor text is to politely, even humorously request the link right from your website. Have a little box on the sidebar or footer with HTML to copy that provides the rich anchor text desired. Make it as easy to possible for the visiting webmaster to use the text in a link to you from his or her site. Summarising: Make the most of using anchor text with external links by having multiple key phrases for the anchor text in the link.
